Over 200 former Republican staffers, including those who worked with former President George W. Bush and Senators John McCain and Mitt Romney, have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
In a letter published by USA Today on Monday, the signatories expressed their concerns about the future of American leadership, stating: “Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable.”
“At home, another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic leadership, this time focused on advancing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions. Abroad, democratic movements will be irreparably jeopardized as Trump and his acolyte JD Vance kowtow to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies. We can’t let that happen,” the group added.
The letter emphasizes the role of “moderate Republicans and conservative independents in key swing states” who were crucial to President Biden’s victory in 2020. The former staffers argue that these voters put their country above party lines and urge them to “take a brave stand once more” by supporting Harris over Trump in the upcoming election.
The Harris campaign has been actively showcasing support from Republicans who oppose Trump. This month, the campaign launched a “Republicans for Harris” group and featured Republican speakers at last week’s convention.
Notable figures included former Representative Adam Kinzinger, who served on the House panel investigating Trump’s 2020 election efforts; former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham; former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan; Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles; and Troye, a former homeland security and counterterrorism adviser to Mike Pence. Pence himself has announced he will not endorse Trump.
