More than 100 former Republican national security officials and lawmakers have publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, condemning Donald Trump’s approach to governance and national security.
In an open letter, the signatories argue that Trump cannot be trusted to handle critical threats or maintain essential relationships with both allies and adversaries. They state, “While we may disagree with Kamala Harris on numerous domestic and foreign policy issues, we believe she possesses the essential qualities to serve as president—qualities that Donald Trump lacks.”
The letter details concerns over Trump’s behavior in office, claiming he “promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies, and undermined our allies.” The group accuses him of politicizing the military, disparaging veterans, and prioritizing personal interests over American values, stating, “His unpredictable nature invites erratic behavior from our adversaries, threatening reckless global consequences.”
Signatories include a diverse array of former officials, from recent government veterans to those who served under President Ronald Reagan. Notable names include former defense secretary Chuck Hagel and John Negroponte, former director of national intelligence under George W. Bush.
Also endorsing Harris are Eliot A. Cohen, co-founder of the influential neoconservative Project for the New American Century and Chester Crocker, a key figure in U.S. relations with South Africa during the end of apartheid.
The letter acknowledges that some Republicans may prefer Trump for various reasons, yet emphasizes that such preferences are overshadowed by concerns over his chaotic and unethical behavior.
The signatories collectively affirm their opposition to Trump’s candidacy, asserting that Harris represents a more stable and principled choice for the nation’s leadership.
“Trump’s unpredictable nature is not the negotiating virtue he extols. To the contrary, in matters of national security, his demeanor invites equally erratic behavior from our adversaries, which irresponsibly threatens reckless and dangerous global consequences,” the letter states.
