Donald Trump’s notable silence regarding former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, who is now a key witness in a hush money trial unfolding in a Manhattan court, drew attention on MSNBC Wednesday morning.
While the ex-president continues to publicly criticize his former attorney Michael Cohen, who has yet to testify, one analyst on “Morning Joe” suggested that Trump’s reluctance to address Pecker might indicate fear of potential revelations. Pecker, once associated with scandalous tabloid journalism, is now divulging information about burying negative stories for money ahead of the 2016 election.
Legal expert Andrew Weissmann described Pecker’s testimony as “damaging” to Trump’s legal defense. Co-host Mika Brzezinski echoed this sentiment, highlighting the insight into questionable media practices and the potential implications for defamation.
Brzezinski, directing the conversation to panelist Mike Barnicle, pointed out Trump’s conspicuous silence on Pecker compared to his vocal criticism of other figures.
“I can’t think of anyone who has hurt Donald Trump’s case up to this point more than Pecker. Yet, he doesn’t post about Pecker, he doesn’t rant about Pecker, he talks about Michael Cohen, he talks about other witnesses. That is why the whole gag order thing is an issue — what’s the deal? Why so quiet about Pecker?”
Barnicle humorously speculated that perhaps Pecker possesses incriminating information known only to him and Trump.
“Maybe Pecker has something on him that Donald knows and only Pecker knows, I certainly don’t know, Mika.”
The discussion then shifted to the broader societal impact, with Brzezinski noting the normalization of labeling media as “fake news.” She suggested that the public might not be surprised by revelations about the National Enquirer’s practices, given the ongoing skepticism of media credibility
