Megyn Kelly came out swinging this weekend, launching a brutal attack on Michelle Obama’s decades-long marriage to former President Barack Obama.
During a fiery segment on her SiriusXM show Saturday, Kelly questioned Michelle’s public comments about her relationship, painting a picture of a marriage that, in her view, looks more strained than solid.
“I think she and he married the wrong people,” Kelly said flatly while speaking with Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan. “It’s amazing ― every word she says about Barack Obama is negative. I can’t think of her just waxing poetic about him, complimenting, ‘He’s brilliant. He’s a great dad. He was the greatest president,’ whatever a normal wife of Barack Obama would say. Every time she opines, it’s something that reflects poorly on him.”
Callahan backed her up, claiming Michelle seems to treat Barack like “a ball of dead weight” now that they’re out of the White House. She added, “I can’t think of anybody I would go to for advice less than Michelle Obama. She really doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
Kelly’s takedown comes after Michelle appeared on actress Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast earlier this month, where she tried to shut down the persistent rumors that her marriage is in trouble. Michelle didn’t name any specific events — like skipping Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration — but she hinted that her decisions had been twisted by the public.
“They couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” Michelle said.
Instead of quieting the chatter, though, the Obamas’ marriage has only become more of a talking point, especially among conservative pundits. Long-debunked gossip — including bizarre claims about Barack Obama and actress Jennifer Aniston — keeps resurfacing in right-wing circles.
Michelle also raised eyebrows in another recent episode of The Light Podcast, co-hosted by her brother Craig Robinson, where she shared her thoughts on what long marriages actually look like:
“If the odds were you’re going to be married to your partner for 50 years and 10 of those years could be bad… you’d sign up for it, you know? And that’s really how it works out.”
That comment — meant to reflect on the ups and downs of any long relationship — didn’t sit well with Kelly, who seized on it to argue that Michelle’s public tone toward Barack sounds more like a warning sign than a love story.
Kelly’s critics were quick to point out the irony of her trashing someone else’s marriage, given her own personal history. But that didn’t stop her from turning up the volume on what’s become a favorite conservative target.
