After federal authorities arrested six militia members who tried to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic governor issued a statement criticizing Donald Trump for “stoking distrust” and “giving comfort to those who spread fear and division.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany then released her own statement attacking Whitmer for criticizing Trump.

“President Trump has continually condemned white supremacists and all forms of hate. Governor Whitmer is sowing division by making these outlandish allegations. America stands united against hate and in support of our federal law enforcement who stopped this plot.”

Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller also attacked Whitmer during a Fox News appearance.

“If we want to talk about hatred, then Governor Whitmer, go look in the mirror,” Miller said. “The fact that she wakes up every day with such hatred in her heart towards President Trump — I mean, President Trump is the one out there condemning these radical groups whether they be on the right or they be on the left … We’re all united standing against anyone who would conspire to cause such hatred and violence, there’s no place for that in American society in any way, shape, or form, but why Governor Whitmer would go attacking President Trump — people can see right through it. They can see Governor Whitmer is a complete phony.”
