On Friday, a federal grand jury indicted former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon for failing to comply with a subpoena from the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Bannon was slapped with two charges of contempt of Congress, one for failing to appear for deposition before the panel and another for refusal to provide documents. He faces two years in prison and heavy fines if he is convicted.
The indictment against Bannon “changes the landscape of the Jan 6 investigation and it could affect other witnesses subpoenaed by Congress,” says criminal defense attorney Caroline Polisi.
During an interview on CNN Friday, Polili singled out former trump Chief Of Staff Mark Meadows, saying he “should be shaking in his boots” after failing to appear for a Nov. 12 deposition, in defiance of the House Jan 6 Panel subpoena.
“You know, I would just know if I were Mark Meadows today, I would be shaking in my boots because he was hoping that this exact situation wouldn’t exactly happen and now it did,” she told CNN host Jake Tapper during an interview on “The Lead.”
“I think this is going to change the legal landscape for congressional inquiry is going forward in every sense of the word,” she added.
Meadows failed to appear before the committee for a deposition Friday, leading the committee to likewise threaten to “consider pursuing criminal contempt or other proceedings to enforce the subpoena.”
