Republican firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene, of Georgia, joined the GOP pile-on against Joe Biden on Sunday, over the president’s withdrawal from the 2024 race by injecting a potent blend of conspiracies into the fray.
Greene, the outspoken Georgia congresswoman, painted Biden’s departure as a symptom of a “soft civil war within the deep state and the ruling elites.” She accused Democrats, the intelligence community, and the media of covering up Biden’s shortcomings until they could no longer hide them, culminating in what she labeled as a coup to force him out.
“There’s a soft civil war happening in the deep state and the elites in power,” Taylor greene wrote on X. “The Democrats, the IC, and their activists in the media have been lying to us saying there’s nothing wrong with Biden for years. Next, they start a coup against him demanding he drop out of the race when they couldn’t hide it anymore. “
In a baseless claim, Greene insinuated financial motives behind the Bidens’ decision, alleging a quid pro quo involving a presidential library windfall that “will pay the entire family for years to come.”
Echoing Greene’s dark insinuations, former 2020 candidate Tulsi Gabbard warned against celebrating Biden’s exit, suggesting Kamala Harris would merely continue as a puppet of the so-called deep state and Hillary Clinton’s supposed cabal of warmongers.
“Biden’s out, Kamala is in Don’t be fooled: policies won’t change. Just like Biden wasn’t the one calling the shots, Kamala Harris won’t be either. She is the new figurehead for the deep state and the maidservant of Hillary Clinton, queen of the cabal of warmongers,” she wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Rep. Laurent Boebert, from Colorado, took a more tempered approach, writing on X: “The problem was never just Joe Biden, though he was a major problem, it was and is the Democrat agenda.”
The Trump campaign added to the onslaught, lambasting Biden as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history and insisting he should resign from the White House immediately. Trump himself described Biden as “Cooked Joe Biden” and derided the Democrats for discarding him after a disastrous debate.
JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, argued that Biden’s decision not to seek reelection should prompt his immediate departure from office.
Meanwhile, top Democrats such as Bill Clinton and Pete Buttigieg lauded Biden’s decision as a selfless act for the good of the nation, positioning him as a pivotal figure in American presidential history.
“Joe Biden has earned his place among the best and most consequential presidents in American history,” wrote Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement. “I am so proud to serve under his leadership, and thankful for his unwavering focus on what is best for our country.”
