Marjorie Taylor Greene has ignited speculation suggesting that Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is possibly being “blackmailed,” and that he’s a “Democrat”, citing what she perceives as a drastic shift in his views.
In an interview with right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson on Tucker Carlson Uncensored, the controversial Georgia Republican, who has recently emerged as a vocal critic of Johnson, expressed concerns over the apparent transformation in the Louisiana Republican’s character.
According to Greene, Johnson’s shift, particularly in his support for initiatives like aid for Ukraine and the $1.2 trillion spending bill, has raised eyebrows, prompting questions about potential coercion. However, it’s important to note that there’s no evidence to support Greene’s conjecture.
“Mike Johnson has completely changed his character in a matter of about five months after he has become speaker of the House,” Greene said, pointing to what she perceives as a departure from Johnson’s Christian and conservative principles.
“Mike Johnson has made a complete departure of who he is and what he stands for and to the point where people are literally asking ‘is he blackmailed? What is wrong with him?’ because he’s completely disconnected with what we want,” she said.
When pressed by Carlson on whether she believed Johnson was indeed being blackmailed, Greene admitted to having “no idea,” adding, “we don’t know who Mike Johnson is anymore so I can’t comprehend it.”
Greene, who previously supported Johnson’s ascension to speaker, has since become a vocal opponent. Last month, she introduced a motion to remove Johnson from his leadership position, citing dissatisfaction with his handling of the spending bill.
In a separate interview with CNN’s Manu Raju on Wednesday, Greene said Johnson is a ‘Democrat,’ comparable to Nancy Pelosi.
She sharply criticized the Speaker for striking a bipartisan deal on a $1.2 trillion funding bill that averted a partial government shutdown.
Greene attacked Johnson for relying on Democratic votes for passage of the bill, lacking many GOP policy demands.
“People are fed up with Republicans that say one thing and turn around and literally join the flock and just continue the same old crap everybody’s tired of,” Greene said, likening Johnson’s tactics to that of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Greene reportedly said Johnson has “literally turned into Mitch McConnell’s twin and worse. He’s a Democrat.”
“There’s not even any daylight between him and Nancy Pelosi at this point,” she reportedly added.
“We cannot get anyone more moderate than Mike Johnson,” Greene dded. “I would argue Mike Johnson, we can’t get any further left than Mike Johnson. I think the Democrats might be happier with him than they are with Hakeem Jeffries.”
