Donald Trump’s decision to halt tariffs on Mexico has left many of his most loyal supporters fuming. On Thursday, the former president stunned his hardcore followers by reversing his stance on a trade war with one of America’s biggest trading partners. Trump had initially planned to pressure Mexico over border issues and drug trafficking but changed his mind after talks with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained his decision: “After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping illegal aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”
Many of his followers saw this as a blatant surrender. Commenters on Truth Social tore into Trump, accusing him of bowing to Mexico and abandoning his tough stance on critical issues like fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.
One user, Steve, wrote: “Melt the cartels already, starting to think you’re in on the cartel deal. MELT THEM LIKE YOU PROMISED.” Another user, Scott S, demanded, “Make them pay a penalty for allowing the last four years of invasion.”
Other critics on Truth Social were especially upset about Mexico’s role in the fentanyl crisis, with one fan, VoiceOfTheUnitedStates, calling Trump “weak” for not following through on the tariffs: “Weak because Mexico is the main source of fentanyl and has done way more damage than Canada has ever dreamed of! You are wrong this time.”
Chukscar, another frustrated supporter, said: “That’s not a negotiation, that’s surrender. We were behind you, Mr. President, but we are not behind surrender.”
Even more extreme comments appeared, with Handsome Truth, a self-proclaimed racist pushing a grotesque conspiracy theory, writing: “Trump realized that she’s Jewish and probably had to tongue-kiss her feet in some depraved satanic blood ritual before dropping the tariffs.”
Others were outraged by the fact that Trump was taking a softer stance with Mexico while continuing to target Canada. One user, Justthabomb15, vented frustration over what he saw as a betrayal: “Big fan but you’re a f—— idiot, Trump, for stopping their tariffs but not Canada’s. For 4 years they dumped illegal invaders into your country and way more drugs and crime, and you punish Canada? What a s—– move.”
As the fallout continues, it’s clear that Trump’s tariff flip-flop has ruffled some feathers with a large portion of his base, with many now questioning his commitment to the hardline policies they once rallied behind.
