Several prominent figures have resigned from the Kennedy Center following President Trump’s decision to appoint himself as chair of the institution’s board.

Last week, Trump announced that he would replace multiple board members and take on the role of chair himself. On Wednesday, the board officially elected him.

Around the same time, musician Ben Folds shared that he would resign as artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra. He explained his decision on Instagram, saying, “It’s been a wonderful 8 years” and noting the work done to bring new audiences to symphonic music.

Opera star Renée Fleming also announced she was stepping down as artistic adviser at large. She expressed her admiration for David Rubenstein, the previous chair whom Trump replaced, calling him “the greatest patriot I know.” She also praised Deborah Rutter, the president of the Kennedy Center who was fired on Wednesday. Fleming said she had great respect for Rutter’s leadership and the bipartisan support the center had received.

Television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes, who served as the Kennedy Center’s treasurer, also resigned from the board. A spokesperson confirmed her departure, saying, “As of today, Shonda Rhimes has resigned from the board of the Kennedy Center.”

Trump responded to the changes by calling it a “Great Honor” to serve as chair. “We will make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!” he wrote on social media.

A White House official confirmed that Trump participated in the board meeting where he was elected. The Kennedy Center issued a statement confirming his appointment and other leadership changes, including the termination of Deborah Rutter’s contract. Richard Grenell was announced as the interim president.

New members of the board include Trump supporters such as singer Lee Greenwood, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, second lady Usha Vance, and senior adviser Dan Scavino.
