The Justice Department has warned Elon Musk’s America PAC that his $1 million sweepstakes for registered voters in swing states may violate federal law, CNN reported Wednesday, citing people briefed on the matter.
Musk, who supports former President Trump and has invested heavily in his campaign, launched the sweepstakes to boost voter registration in key battlegrounds. However, experts have raised concerns that the giveaway could contravene laws against paying for voter registration, as only registered voters in specific states can participate.
According to the report, a letter from the Justice Department’s public integrity section was sent to Musk’s PAC, although the department has not commented further.
Musk announced the sweepstakes at a Trump event, aiming to gather up to 2 million petition signatures in support of First and Second Amendment rights.
After Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro criticized the initiative, Musk defended it on social media but did not address the legal implications. The PAC later reframed the messaging, suggesting winners would be paid as “spokespersons” rather than directly for signing the petition.
It is unclear when Musk received the Justice Department’s letter or whether it affected the PAC’s strategy.
