A federal judge struck down President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago, handing a major defeat to his immigration crackdown.
The Justice Department had sued the state and city, claiming their sanctuary policies blocked federal immigration enforcement.
This was the first lawsuit from the Trump administration targeting sanctuary cities, part of Trump’s plan to ramp up deportations and tighten border control for his 2024 campaign.
But U.S. District Judge Lindsay Jenkins dismissed the case on Friday. She ruled the government “lacks standing” to sue over the sanctuary policies. Jenkins also said the lawsuit was an attempt to “encroach on state sovereignty.”
This ruling halts the administration’s push against sanctuary cities, marking a clear legal setback for Trump’s immigration efforts.
This is a developing story.
