Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett, if Texas, declared Sunday that America might not exist as we know it soon because President Donald Trump is acting like a “thug.”
Crockett appeared on MSNBC with anchor Alex Witt to discuss Trump’s recent actions, such as firing top FBI officials involved in his criminal cases and the January 6th Capitol riot investigations.
The Texas Democrat argued that Trump is trying to remove the checks and balances within the Department of Justice (DOJ) to increase his own power. She also pointed out that voters got exactly what they voted for and should not be surprised by his actions now.
“Americans thought it was okay to take a full-fledged criminal and make him the president of the United States,” Crockett said. “And then they want to act aghast when he does criminal things.”
Witt asked Crockett about the firings of top FBI officials and the DOJ’s push to remove others connected to Trump’s investigations. He called it a “cleansing” of those who worked on Trump-related cases, including the January 6th investigations.
In response, Crockett agreed, calling it exactly that — a cleansing. She said when Democrats warned about the risks to democracy, many people dismissed those concerns. But now, with Trump’s actions, those warnings seem more real.
“Look, when Democrats said our democracy was at risk, people called us crazy. They said it wasn’t true,” she explained. “But Trump has been clear about what he wants. He said he’d be a dictator from day one. People said, ‘Oh, he’s just talking.’ Well, he’s not just talking anymore. He’s acting.”
Crockett also mentioned Project 2025, a plan Trump’s team has pushed to consolidate power, which she says is an effort to make him more like a king. She stressed that in a democratic republic, the way Trump is behaving isn’t how things are supposed to work.
“We have checks and balances, and he’s doing everything he can to get rid of them. The DOJ people he’s going after? They were just doing their jobs,” she said.
Crockett’s main point was that the American public shouldn’t be surprised by Trump’s actions. “The real problem is that Americans thought it was okay to elect a full-fledged criminal as president. And now they act shocked when he does criminal things,” she said. “We’ve got a thug in charge of the United States right now. If we don’t wake up, we may not have a United States anymore because all he’s done is divide us.”
