U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) called out House Republicans to simply say that Russia invaded Ukraine, especially in light of former President Donald Trump’s recent comments on the conflict.
Trump has raised eyebrows by suggesting that Ukraine started the war, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and criticizing him for not ending the war earlier. His comments have sparked controversy.
In a meeting at the White House on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron strongly disagreed with Trump, publicly stating that he believes Russia is the aggressor in the war.
During a House hearing on Wednesday, Crockett addressed the issue, saying it was time for Republicans to acknowledge the truth about the invasion. She directly challenged them for not clearly stating that Russia was the one who invaded Ukraine.
“It’s time for us to say, ‘Mr. President, guess what? Russia invaded Ukraine!’” Crockett said. “Can we at least agree on that one? Facts matter! This could lead us into an international crisis or even World War III because a president is siding with [Russian President Vladimir Putin] and spreading lies about who started this war.”
She continued, “Mr. Chair, I’ve got a minute left; but I really want to ask my colleagues if any of them will say today that, when it comes to the war in Ukraine, it wasn’t Ukraine invading Russia — it was the other way around. Is there anyone in here who has the courage to say that Russia invaded Ukraine?”
Her question was met with silence from the room.
