Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) slammed President Donald Trump’s massive budget bill as a “big ugly mess,” calling out what he sees as reckless, bloated, and dangerous for the country’s future.
“This is a problem we’ve been facing for decades now,” Paul said Sunday on Fox News. “And if we don’t stand up on it, I really fear the direction the country is going.”
Appearing on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream, Paul blasted the bill pushed by House Republicans and supported by Trump, warning that it continues to pile on debt with no real effort to rein in spending.
“You can offer people free stuff,” Paul said, “and people are, oh, thank you for free health care. But what you don’t tell them is we’re borrowing the money from China to pay for your health care… I think it’s the greatest threat to our national security.”
Paul slammed both parties for refusing to touch big-ticket programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps — programs that eat up nearly all the government’s revenue.
“We bring in about $5 trillion in revenue, and we spend $7 trillion,” Paul said. “The $5 trillion is consumed by Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and other welfare programs. So the people say, well, we’re taking this off the table, and we’re not going to touch any of those programs. Well, they’re just not frankly serious.”
Paul warned conservatives that unless these programs are cut, they’re in for disappointment.
“Somebody has to stand up and yell, the emperor has no clothes,” he said, mocking the blind support for what Trump once proudly called his “big, beautiful bill.” “Everybody’s falling in lockstep on this… don’t question anything.”
