Former Trump administration Secretary of Education Betsy Devos said at a recent event that the department she once led “should not exist” and must be abolished.
Devos’s remarks came at the inaugural Moms for Liberty summit on Saturday, local news outlet The Florida Phoenix reported over the weekend.
“I personally think the Department of Education should not exist,” Devos told a conservative crowd in Tampa, Florida.
“Moms for Liberty” is a conservative group that rose to national prominence for its objection to children wearing face masks at school during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Florida Phoenix also reported that summit attendees were given tips on how to recruit, promote and endorse conservative school board candidates.
Devos is the latest conservative figure who suggests getting rid of the Department of Education.
Last year, a group of GOP House members proposed a bill aimed at abolishing the Department of Education. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced the bill in February 2021 with co-sponsors including Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).
