CNBC senior economics reporter Steve Liesman didn’t hold back when he criticized Donald Trump’s economic plans, especially his constant back-and-forth on tariffs.
“I’m going to say this at risk of my job, but what President Trump is doing is insane. It is absolutely insane,” Liesman said on Tuesday’s broadcast of The Exchange.
Liesman slammed Trump’s decision to threaten a 50% tariff on Canada unless the country agrees to become part of the U.S. He called it “insane” and said it’s impossible to describe the situation any other way.
Liesman also pointed out the lack of checks on Trump now compared to his first term, when there were people around him who tried to calm things down.
“The other thing that’s not talked about,” Liesman added, “is what’s going on within the administration in terms of how they’re treating the Constitution and laws.”
According to Liesman, this approach is harmful to the economy. “We need massive amounts of capital to fund our deficits, pay for what we want, sell bonds, and keep stock prices high. But this administration is pushing foreign investors away,” he argued.
Liesman’s warning was clear: “Insanity is not a strategy.”
