Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) caught major heat online after publicly revealing she may not know what’s actually in the Declaration of Independence—just one day before the Fourth of July.
It started with a post on X, where Mace tried to mock House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Jeffries had referenced the Declaration in a long House floor speech opposing Republican-backed tax cuts and Medicaid rollbacks.
“Did Hakeem Jeffries just say the Declaration of Independence reads like an INDICTMENT? Did I hear that right?” Mace wrote.
Yes, she did. And he was right.
The Declaration of Independence isn’t just about freedom—it’s a detailed list of accusations against King George III. In other words, it reads exactly like an indictment.
Journalist David Weigel responded: “He said ‘the second part of it reads like an indictment against an out of control king.’ Which it does. ‘He has obstructed the Administration of Justice’ etc etc. It’s a short read.”
Criminal defense attorney Scott Greenfield added: “The Declaration of Independence was, in part, an indictment of King George III. Anyone moderately familiar with the Declaration of Independence would know this.”
Others didn’t hold back.
“Do you have a humiliation fetish?” asked political YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen.
“Maybe spend less time cosplaying in pjs … A key part of the Declaration of Independence is an indictment of King George III,” wrote Denver election official Andy Szekeres, referring to Mace’s recent stunt showing up in D.C. in pajamas.
Alexandria City Councilman R. Kirk McPike didn’t mince words: “It should surprise no one that this imbecile has never read the Declaration of Independence.”
Brains Matter, a user on X, wrote: “Yes, you did, and yes, it was. It was literally an indictment of King George III (read the damn thing), and today it’s an indictment of King Trump.”
“If ya’ll didn’t skip history class, you might know this,” added Ravi Brewster. “Have you ever heard of King George III?”
And Mike Bates flatly stated: “It was an indictment of England’s king, but never having read it you wouldn’t know that. Like Trump, you’re ignorant of our history but like to pretend you’re a big patriot.”
As of now, Mace hasn’t responded. But as the country gears up to celebrate its independence, her post served as a reminder: If you’re going to wave the flag, know what it stands for.
