A recent interview on Fox News between President Trump and Elon Musk sparked a wave of reactions, including a mock comment from conservative pundit Jonah Goldberg about Vice President JD Vance. Following the friendly exchange between Trump and Musk, Goldberg jokingly suggested that if he were Vance, he’d be “day drinking at this point.”
During the interview with Sean Hannity, Trump and Musk appeared close, almost like “brothers,” as Hannity put it. Musk praised Trump, calling him a “good man” and suggested the media was trying to create distance between them. Trump agreed, adding that Musk had called him about the media’s attempts to drive a wedge between them.
Goldberg, speaking on CNN, pointed out the growing influence Musk seems to have in Trump’s circle. He suggested that the relationship between the two might not last, and that tensions were already brewing, especially within the MAGA base. Goldberg mentioned how figures like Steve Bannon had criticized Musk as a “fraud” and someone with too much control over the narrative.
Goldberg also warned that Musk’s rising influence could backfire. “If I were Vance, I’d be day drinking at this point,” he said, hinting at the discomfort JD Vance might be feeling about his own future in the party as Trump and Musk’s relationship takes center stage.
Journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, however, disagreed with Goldberg’s take on Bannon’s influence, pointing out that Trump and Musk seemed to have a “father-son” relationship. She suggested that this closeness could leave Vance feeling uncertain about his position in the political landscape.
Adding to Vance’s concerns is Trump’s reluctance to endorse him as a potential 2028 successor. In a recent Super Bowl interview, Trump praised Vance’s capabilities but stopped short of committing to him as his future replacement, saying it was “too early” to make such a decision. This left some wondering whether Vance’s future role was as secure as he might have hoped.

@CNN keeps pounding away with the propaganda and lies. Jonah Goldberg is saying things that flat out aren’t true. Listening to him, he’s not living in reality.
It’s criminal to have legacy media tearing the very fabric of our country apart by this garbage day after day. pic.twitter.com/PF0Sm2mdL1
