In a move that’s raising eyebrows and eliciting chuckles, House Republicans have tossed a wild proposal onto the runway: renaming Washington Dulles International Airport as the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The proposal was co-sponsored by Representatives Troy Nehls, Michael Waltz, Andy Ogles, Chuck Fleischmann, Paul Gosar, and Barry Moore. The fate of the resolution remains unclear, as it is uncertain whether it will advance to a formal vote on the House floor. Even if it passes the GOP-controlled House, it is expected to face opposition in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Representative Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) told Fox News Digital “there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil.”
However, Democratic Representative Don Beyer, of Virginia, criticized the move, accusing the bill’s authors of attempting to curry favor with Trump and highlighting the suffering caused by Trump’s policies, such as the controversial Muslim ban.
“I remember Republicans like those who wrote this bill hiding and giving mealy mouthed responses when asked about the suffering Trump’s Muslim ban caused,” Beyer tweeted in response to the bill, referring to travelers who were detained at the airport under Trump’s controversial executive order blocking entrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. “They know Dulles will never be renamed after Trump. Again, that’s not the point, the point is to suck up to their Dear Leader.”
Now, the big question: Will this renaming scheme actually take off? Well, it’s about as likely as finding a unicorn grazing on the tarmac. Even if it somehow taxis through the GOP-controlled House, the Democratic-controlled Senate is expected to slam the brakes on this joyride.
In the annals of ridiculous political proposals, this one might just earn its wings. But hey, stranger things have happened in the land of American politics. After all, Trump once reportedly discussed having his face carved onto Mount Rushmore. He then claimed “it was a joke.”
