Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker and one of the most influential figures in modern American politics, announced on Thursday that she will retire from Congress.

The 85-year-old San Francisco representative, who served as speaker from 2007-2011 and again from 2019-2023, shared a video message detailing the end of her political career and expressing gratitude to her constituents.

“I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” Pelosi said. “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative as we go forward.”

Pelosi’s career has been defined by her role as a driving force in Democratic politics. She played a central role in landmark legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, which made health insurance accessible to all Americans regardless of pre-existing conditions, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which directed billions toward energy and climate initiatives while reforming health care.

She was also a key figure of opposition during the first Trump administration, overseeing two impeachments of the president, and earned a reputation as one of the most effective fundraisers in American politics.

After the 2022 election, Pelosi stepped down as House Democratic leader, handing the reins to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Despite this, she remained a powerful presence in party decision-making, respected for her decades of experience and her influence behind the scenes.

As Pelosi prepares to exit Congress, she leaves behind a legacy of political skill, legislative achievements, and a career that reshaped both her city and the nation. Watch the video below:
