Former Trump White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci stated on Tuesday that former President Trump’s recent criticisms of the judge in his New York hush money trial indicate he is “super nervous” about the verdict.
“He is super nervous about this,” Scaramucci said in a CNN interview. “Those attacks on the judge and all the spurious suggestions are straight out of Trump’s playbook. He knows the facts of the case and is very worried, which he showed last night.”
Scaramucci’s remarks came as closing arguments began in Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan. The 12-person jury will soon decide whether to convict Trump on 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records.
The charges stem from reimbursements Trump made to his then-fixer Michael Cohen, who paid adult film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 in October 2016 to remain silent about an alleged affair. Trump has pleaded not guilty and repeatedly denied the affair with Daniels.
Over the holiday weekend, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the case, calling him “radical” and “highly conflicted” ahead of Tuesday’s court session.
Judge Merchan had previously imposed a gag order prohibiting Trump from publicly commenting on witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, or the judge’s family, but it does not prevent him from criticizing Merchan or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Scaramucci, who briefly served in Trump’s administration before being dismissed, noted that while the defense team has performed well, it might not suffice.
“The evidence is overwhelming that the law was broken. The key issue is whether the 12 jurors will believe that,” Scaramucci said.
