JD Vance was trying to fire up an Alaska crowd for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. Then a heckler decided he had other plans.
Vance was in Fairbanks Monday campaigning for Sullivan, who is facing a surprisingly competitive race against Democrat Mary Peltola, Alaska’s former at-large congresswoman.
And just as Vance was making his pitch for Sullivan, someone in the crowd started shouting.
Vance tried to talk over him.
He was discussing Alaska’s military importance and the F-35s stationed at Eielson Air Force Base when the heckler interrupted.
“I don’t know if Ohio has two squadrons of F-35s, Dan,” Vance said, apparently noticing the disturbance but continuing with his speech.
Then he kept going.
He talked about the historic 11th Airborne Division and billions of dollars in missile-defense investments through the Golden Dome.
But the heckler wasn’t letting up.
Eventually, Vance stopped.
A White House pool report said the man continued yelling insults while being escorted out of the venue, apparently directing some of them at both Vance and Donald Trump.
One of the words he reportedly used was “pervert.”
And then things got even stranger.
Video from White House pool reporter Mary Margaret Olohan showed the heckler being escorted out.
He was wearing a blue Alaska hat and a shirt that read, in part, “Putin & P—y.”
The man has not been identified.
Footage from Alaska’s News Source showed him being led away while shouting:
“Stay out of my couch!”
The remark appears to reference an old internet meme about Vance that went viral in 2024.
The bizarre meme claimed that Vance had described a sexual encounter involving a couch cushion.
Apparently, the meme is still alive and well in Alaska. And Vance has clearly gotten used to hecklers.
Just last week in Florida, he dismissed another protester as a “clown” and a “Democrat plant.”
But the Fairbanks interruption came as Vance was making a much broader argument about the Alaska Senate race.
Sullivan is facing Peltola in what has become a closely watched contest.
A New York Times/Siena University poll conducted last week showed Peltola with a seven-point lead, while a separate Quantus Insights poll from the same week showed the race essentially tied.
Vance was there to make the case that Alaska needs Sullivan in the Senate.
Instead, for a few minutes, the crowd was focused on a heckler yelling insults at the vice president and the president.
Vance accused Democrats of being obsessed with Alaska and claimed they want to use the state as a launching pad for a broader “far-left” agenda.
“AOC and Kamala Harris and the rest of them, they see the last frontier as their last, best hope to take America in a far-left direction,” Vance said.
He accused Democrats of wanting to impeach Trump, shut down energy projects and undermine what he described as the country’s progress.
“They are ruthless,” Vance said. “They will do whatever they need to do, right up to cheating and right up to lying and right up to putting somebody on the ballot who has no reason to be there other than to help them steal an election.”
That’s quite an accusation. But for a few minutes, none of that mattered.
The rally had been cruising along. Then one guy started yelling. Vance tried to ignore him. Eventually, he couldn’t.
And before the heckler was escorted out, he managed to turn a vice-presidential campaign rally into a very strange conversation about perverts, Putin — and couches.
