Harris Surges Ahead: New Poll Shows Record Lead Over Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead of former President Donald Trump, achieving a record-setting six-point lead nationally, according to the latest Morning Consult poll.

Harris now holds 51% of the support among likely voters, compared to Trump’s 45%. This marks a significant increase from her three-point lead prior to their recent debate. Her current support level is the highest recorded for her this election cycle, fueled by strong backing from Democrats, Biden 2020 voters, liberals, women, and younger demographics, including 18- to 34-year-olds and millennials.

The poll also highlights Harris’s strong performance in the recent presidential debate. Among the 61% of likely voters who watched the debate, a decisive 54% favored Harris, while only 33% believed Trump won. This 28-point margin in Harris’s favor is notably larger than the 25-point advantage Trump held over President Joe Biden in a similar post-debate survey from June.

Additionally, Harris’s favorability among voters has reached a new high, with 53% expressing a positive view of her, compared to 44% for Trump.

Trust in congressional Democrats has also seen a boost, particularly on issues like immigration and national security, where the Republicans’ previous advantages have diminished.

The survey, conducted from September 13-15, 2024, polled 11,022 likely voters with an unweighted margin of error of +/-1 percentage point.
