Washington State Senator Doug Ericksen, a Republican, has died from COVID-19 his family said in a statement, local station KOMO News reported Saturday. He was 52 years old.
“We are heartbroken to share that our husband and father passed away on Friday, Dec. 17. Please keep our family in your prayers and thank you for continuing to respect our privacy in this extremely difficult time,” Ericksen’s family said in the statement, according to the report.
Ericksen’s death came weeks after he said he had tested positive for the coronavirus while in El Salvador.
The Republican senator was taken to a hospital in Florida where it was reported that he was in stable condition and on the road to recovery.
He leaves behind two daughters and a wife.
Gov. Jay Inslee (D) issued a statement in response to the senator’s death saying, “Trudi and I send our deep condolences to Doug’s family, friends and colleagues. Our hearts are with them.”
