Republican congressman Anthony Gonzalez, of Ohio, has vowed to stop Donald Trump from stealing the next election, warning his fellow Republicans that the former president poses a grave threat to US Democracy.
Gonzalez, who announced his retirement from Congress two months ago, said he believes Trump will try to steal the next election, but he warned that Trump could have more help next time from those in charge of running and certifying elections.
“I think it’s all pushing towards one of two outcomes: He either wins legitimately, which he may do, or if he loses again, you just try to steal it,” he said, according to CNN.
Gonzalez was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He called the Capitol insurrection a “fallen nation territory” effort during the interview.
“My family left Cuba to avoid that fate,” he said. “I will not let it happen here,” Gonzalez said.
Cnn noted that “while Gonzalez is retiring from Congress, he said he’s not leaving the political arena — especially if Trump runs again.”
“Should he be the nominee, or should he run again, I’ll do everything I can to stop him,” he said. “Can I stop him? I have no idea. But I believe as a citizen of this country who loves this country and respects the Constitution, that’s my responsibility.”
