GOP Rep. George Santos sat down for a one-on-one interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan where he admitted that he is a “terrible liar” and revealed that he did it because he wanted to be “accepted” by Republicans.
Morgan asked Santos if he would be “prepared” to admit that he’s been a “terrible liar.”
“Sure,” Santos replied. “Well, I’ve been a terrible liar on those subjects, and what I tried to convey to the American people is, I made mistakes.”
During the interview, the New York Republican claimed that his numerous lies about his background weren’t “about tricking people.”
“This was about getting accepted by the party here locally,” he said.
Santos, who is facing multiple investigations by local, state, and federal authorities in connection to his alleged campaign finance violations, also complained that people think he’s a criminal.
“I’m not a criminal,” he said.
