In a surprising political shift, former Bush-era Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has endorsed Kamala Harris for President. Gonzales, who served as the White House Counsel and Attorney General under President George W. Bush, made his announcement in an op-ed for Politico Magazine.
Gonzales emphasized the critical nature of presidential integrity and respect for democratic institutions, stating:
“The American presidency is the most powerful position in the world. While our constitution and laws, alongside institutions like Congress and our courts, serve as guardrails, the president’s integrity and respect for these institutions are crucial checks on the abuse of power.”
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Gonzales expressed deep concern over the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House. He described Trump as a significant threat to the rule of law and underscored his decision to support Harris as a crucial move in safeguarding democratic principles.
“The character of the person we elect in November is more important than ever,” Gonzales wrote. “Given the current Congress’s failure to check executive abuses and the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity, character is now the primary safeguard against potential abuses.”
Gonzales’s endorsement adds to a growing list of prominent Republicans supporting Harris, following the notable endorsements from figures like Dick and Liz Cheney. His backing signals a potential shift among Republicans who are concerned about the state of American democracy and the future of the rule of law.
Gonzales’s support highlights a broader trend among some Republicans who view Harris as the best choice to preserve democratic values and counter the perceived threats posed by Trump’s potential return.
