A Florida man barely escaped with both legs after an alligator bit his right leg when he mistook the reptile for a dog, police said.
Deputies told local station WTSP-TV that the man was walking outside Warm Mineral Springs Motel on South Tamiami Trail in North Port around 12:30 a.m.on Tuesday when he spotted a dark figure that “appeared to look like a dog with a long leash.”
When he approached the animal, the alligator bit the man’s right leg as he tried to escape, the man told investigators. The man flagged down a deputy who was in the area for an unrelated call.
The man was taken to a hospital, and the gator was captured, according to the station.
