A bomb explosion at the Santa Maria Courthouse in California injured five people Wednesday morning around 8:45 a.m., multiple news outlets reported, citing local officials.
According to Raquel Zick, a spokesperson for the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, the blast originated from an intentionally set improvised explosive device. Law enforcement quickly cleared the area, confirming that the injuries were non-life-threatening.
A male suspect has been detained in connection with the incident, and the courthouse remains closed as investigators examine the scene.
Hospital spokesperson Sandy Doucette reported that three victims are in fair condition while two are in good condition, receiving top-level care.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office is actively monitoring the situation.
Santa Maria is about 160 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
