House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy appears to again suffer a humiliating defeat in his bid for House Speaker as more than five Republicans opposed him in the ninth round of voting on Thursday.
Despite concessions from McCarthy to hardliners, at least 20 GOP lawmakers are not voting for McCarthy.
The House is now voting on a ninth ballot for speaker. But it appears McCarthy has failed again to reach the majority needed to win the speakership.
A tenth round of voting would be the longest speaker contest in 164 years.
