Elon Musk’s social media platform X has reinstated the “White Dudes for Harris” account after a brief suspension ignited widespread backlash.
The account, which boasts nearly 100,000 followers and supports Vice President Kamala Harris (though not officially affiliated with her campaign), was restored on Tuesday. The reinstatement comes after a surge of public outcry and complaints directed at Musk and X.
In a post celebrating their return, the “White Dudes for Harris” team expressed gratitude: “WE ARE SO BACK! After a groundswell of grassroots complaints to @ElonMusk from the #WhiteDudesforHarris community, our account was reinstated & we’re allowed to post again. Thank you for coming to our aid & carrying on this conversation in our absence.”
Mike Nellis, an organizer for the group, thanked supporters on his personal account: “Thanks to everyone for your likes, comments, shares, DMs, and everything else you did to put the pressure on @ElonMusk and Twitter.”
The suspension occurred Monday evening, shortly after nearly 200,000 Democrats—including notable celebrities—gathered on a Zoom call to support Harris’ presidential bid. The call resulted in $4 million in donations.
Accusations quickly surfaced suggesting Musk, a known supporter of Donald Trump, was behind the suspension. Organizers Nellis and Ross Morales Rocketto criticized Musk on social media, with Nellis questioning whether their suspension was a first in the platform’s history.
The controversy has prompted increased donations to the group. Historian Timothy Snyder announced he would double his donation, criticizing Musk’s actions: “South African billionaires should not obstruct Americans organizing for democracy.”
Users on X also criticized Musk, with some sarcastically questioning his commitment to free speech, while others suggested that the suspension might have been intended to undermine Harris’ campaign.
Musk’s handling of the situation continues to draw scrutiny, casting a spotlight on his stance on free speech and political engagement.
