During a controversial appearance at the Life Center megachurch in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump-supporting billionaire Elon Musk made headlines once more with a joke about the assassination of Vice President Kamala Harris. While speaking to a crowd of Trump supporters, Musk remarked that “no one’s even bothering to try to kill Kamala,” reiterating a sentiment he has shared before.
Musk, a prominent financier of a major Trump Super PAC, used the church setting to promote a cash giveaway aimed at swing-state voters. He pledged a daily sweepstakes of $1 million for registered voters who back his Super PAC’s petition focusing on First Amendment and access to guns. “The Second Amendment,” Musk said, “is there to protect the First Amendment.”
However, the highlight of his speech was Musk’s attempt at “humor” regarding Harris. He linked his “joke” to a conspiracy theory about “the uniparty” controlling Washington, claiming that when the current administration’s plans falter, a new “puppet” emerges, alluding to Harris potentially taking Biden’s place. He suggested that returning Trump to power would frighten the establishment, adding darkly that “that’s why they’re… trying to kill him.”
Musk then reiterated his quip about someone killing Harris, stating, “Assassinating a puppet is pointless,” while emphasizing that he was merely making an observation, not a suggestion.
“I mentioned as a joke — I meant it as a joke — that no one’s even bothering to try to kill Kamala,” Musk said. “Because there’s no point. There’s no point. [They’d] just get another puppet, you know.” The billionaire hastened to add: “I’m not suggesting someone should try to kill her. It’s pointless! I’m just making an observation. Nobody’s bothered. Why is that? Because it doesn’t matter. Yeah? Assassinating a puppet is pointless.”
This marks at least the third time Musk has made light of the idea of violence against Harris since she entered the political spotlight.
His repeated remarks have sparked widespread criticism, with many deeming them inappropriate given the serious nature of threats against public figures. Critics, including former Congressman Adam Kinzinger and ex-White House adviser Olivia Troye, condemned Musk for suggesting violence against elected officials. Troye remarked that joking about assassinating leaders is not just tasteless, but dangerous, especially in today’s politically charged environment.
