President Donald Trump’s approval keeps sinking fast, with more Americans saying they strongly disapprove of how he’s handling the job.
A new Economist/YouGov poll, released Friday, shows that just 40% of Americans “strongly or somewhat” approve of Trump’s presidency. Meanwhile, 56% say they “strongly or somewhat” disapprove — with a massive 47% saying they “strongly disapprove.” Only 4% said they weren’t sure.
The sharp disapproval cuts deep across multiple groups. Among young Americans aged 18 to 29, only 29% approve of Trump’s job in office. His highest support is among those 65 and older, where 48% say they approve.
Party divides remain stark. Most Republicans still back Trump, and most Democrats oppose him. But intensity matters — and the strong disapproval is rising fast.
Among Americans who identify as “very liberal,” 95% strongly disapprove of Trump. On the other end of the political spectrum, 72% of “very conservative” Americans strongly approve of him.
These results aren’t isolated. A Reuters/Ipsos poll earlier this month showed Trump’s approval rating had dropped 7 points since the start of his second term — down to 40%. A separate Pew Research Center poll puts his approval even lower, at 38%.
Across multiple national surveys tracked by Decision Desk HQ, Trump currently sits at 45.6% approval and 51.1% disapproval — still underwater.
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted August 15–18 among 1,568 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of about 3.5 percentage points.
