The local Democratic Party office in Kenosha, Wisconsin has reported an alarming trend of threatening letters targeting residents who display support for Democratic candidates, particularly Vice President Kamala Harris. Recipients of these letters have reported receiving ominous warnings about potential retribution and spiritual consequences if they fail to vote for former President Donald Trump.
Lori Hawkins, chair of the Kenosha County Democratic Party, confirmed that multiple residents have contacted the police regarding the letters. “There are various versions, but most people seem to have received both,” she told the Wisconsin Examiner.
One such letter, shared with the Wisconsin Examiner, begins with a direct accusation: “We see that you have Democrat signs on your property.” It continues with a dire warning, stating, “When you die, you will be held accountable before almighty God for voting for an open border that allows millions of illegal immigrants to enter.” The letter alleges that voters will face divine judgment for endorsing “communism” and concludes with a threat of damnation.
In response to the escalating reports, Hawkins emphasized the importance of community solidarity, urging residents to speak out and report similar incidents. “The letters are unsigned and typed, suggesting a broader organization is instigating this fear,” she said. Hawkins criticized the letters for misrepresenting Democratic platforms and noted an increase in vandalism against Democratic yard signs, contrasting this with the lack of similar incidents involving Republican signs. “This is an attempt to silence and intimidate people,” she added.
Despite the threats, local Democrats are undeterred. Volunteer Nancy Locante received one of the letters, which included inflammatory language about societal issues and urged adherence to “biblical truths.” “It’s unsettling knowing they’re watching you,” she said, but affirmed her commitment to canvassing for the Democratic Party. “I’m proudly wearing my campaign buttons.”
In Milwaukee, the organization Leaders Igniting Transformation (LIT) has actively knocked on over 600,000 doors, encouraging voter participation, while also receiving reports of similar letters in the region. Recent incidents of vandalism targeting Democratic signs have also been reported in the suburban city of Wauwatosa, where red spray paint was used to deface signs.
Both the Harris and Trump campaigns are intensifying their efforts in Wisconsin, holding competing rallies in Milwaukee as Election Day approaches on November 5.
