President Donald Trump’s latest outburst — calling for Democrats in Congress to be hanged — set off a blistering response from Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who warned that the country is drifting into truly dangerous territory if leaders stay silent.

“The president of the United States just called for members of Congress to be executed,” Murphy said in a searing video. “If you are a person of influence in this country, maybe it’s time to pick a fucking side.”

Murphy didn’t dance around it. He went straight at Republicans, telling them it’s long past time to show some backbone as Trump escalates his violent rhetoric.

“If you are a Republican in Congress, if you are a Republican governor, maybe it’s time to draw a line in the sand and say that under no circumstances should the president of the United States be calling on his political opposition to be hanged.”

Then he laid out the bigger picture — and it wasn’t subtle.

“We are at a very dangerous moment right now,” Murphy warned. “The president is engaged in the wholesale incitement, endorsement and rationalization of political violence in this country.

“This is a moment for people to step up, for Republicans to step up, for business leaders to step up. Anybody who has a voice or a soapbox in this country needs to draw a line in the sand and say that it is not acceptable for the president of the United States to call on the murder of his political opposition.”

Trump’s rage spiral started after six Democratic lawmakers — all veterans or former intelligence officers — released a video reminding military members that they aren’t required to follow illegal orders. It was straightforward, almost dry.

“Our laws are clear,” said Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a Navy veteran and former astronaut. “You can refuse illegal orders.”

Trump’s reaction was anything but dry. He called the video “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” and reposted an anonymous message saying, “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!”

Once upon a time, a president calling for political opponents to be executed would’ve triggered a national emergency. Now it’s just another day in American politics — which is exactly why Murphy dropped the filter and sounded the alarm.
