CNN’s Dana Bash couldn’t contain her amusement while presenting a clip of Fox News host Sean Hannity struggling to help Donald Trump walk back his comments about using the government to target his enemies if re-elected.
In the pre-taped and edited interview aired on the conservative network Wednesday night, Hannity seemed to be guiding a vengeful Trump to refute critics’ warnings about his plans for retribution.
Introducing the clip with a smirk, Bash remarked, “Last night Trump was on with Hannity, who was clearly trying to throw him a lifeline, but Trump seemed determined not to take it.”
The clip featured Hannity urging the former president, “Focus on those that want people to believe you want retribution. That you will use the system of justice to go after your political enemies.”
Trump’s response, however, revealed his desire for revenge: “So, number one, they’re wrong,” he began. “It has to stop, because otherwise, we’re not going to have a country. Look, when this election is over, based on what they’ve done. You have to do it. Look, I know you want me to say something…” As Hannity interrupted, Trump persisted, “I don’t want to look naïve.”
Despite Hannity’s best efforts, Trump’s intent to seek retribution was unmistakable, leaving little doubt about his vengeful ambitions if he returns to power.
