President Donald Trump issued a statement Tuesday on the deadly mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left four people dead, including a New York police officer. In a blunt statement, Trump called the gunman a “crazed lunatic” and said the attack was a “tragic” act of violence.

“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,” Trump said in a message posted to Truth Social. “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence.”

The shooting happened Monday night inside 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise that’s home to firms like Blackstone and the NFL. Authorities say the gunman, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the building with an AR-15-style rifle. He gunned down three people in the lobby, then went to the 33rd floor, killed a fourth victim, and shot himself.

Trump paid tribute to NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh and father of two, who was killed while responding to the shooting.

“My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Trump said. “God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!”
