The Supreme Court’s blockbuster term has reached into every corner of American life, overturning women’s rights to abortion, reordering intimate family choices, breaching the separation of church and state, and diminishing the steps the government can take to protect the environment, and expanding gun rights while making it harder for the government to prevent mass shootings.
As noted by CNN, “the speed and sweep by which the right-wing majority acted reflect ‘restless and newly constituted Court.’ And it is not finished.”
The assault on individual rights was possible after then-president Donald Trump, aided by Sen. Mitch McConnell, installed three right-wing judges: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, creating a conservative supermajority.
It was just a question of how quickly the most extreme judges would plow forward with a religious-based agenda, and whether the conservative but incrementalist Chief Justice John Roberts would be able to slow them.
Now, according to CNN, after denying women their rights to abortion and diminishing the government’s ability to reduce gun violence or protect the environment, the high court is ready to impact voting rights and LGBTQ protections.
