Colombian Representative Angela Vergara, who founded “Latinas for Trump,” is learning a harsh lesson in poetic irony. The same politician who has openly celebrated the Republican Party and Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies is now pleading for her government to intervene after her 22-year-old son, Rafael Alonso Vergara, was detained by ICE for nearly three weeks.

On Friday, Vergara posted a video on social media, painting a picture of what she called a nightmare. “This is a person who was awaiting his legal situation, but he had his work permit and social security. A young man who has never even committed a traffic violation but who, like many Colombians, is going through hell,” she said. The congresswoman said her son had been “imprisoned and chained” for 18 days, detained at 4 a.m. on a public road in Louisiana after being identified as an immigrant.

Vergara’s son has been in the U.S. since 2022 and applied for asylum a year after his arrival. Following his arrest, she requested voluntary return to Colombia, hoping it would be the fastest route to freedom. “My son is not undocumented. My son is just another Latino who is suffering firsthand what thousands are suffering in the US. There are people like him who are not criminals,” Vergara stressed.

The timing is brutal. Since returning to the Oval Office, Trump has doubled down on ICE and Border Patrol powers, unleashing aggressive raids, limiting visas, and ramping up deportations. More than 650,000 undocumented immigrants have reportedly been deported in the last year. Agents, clad like paramilitaries, have turned U.S. cities into hostile zones, with operations in Democrat-run cities including Minneapolis, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Some of these operations have escalated to deadly violence, with protesters shot during demonstrations against Trump’s policies.

Vergara is now asking Colombia’s government to “intervene” to speed up repatriation flights. In a letter to Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, she urged coordination of humanitarian flights for Colombians, with Air Force support, to prevent citizens from being held indefinitely—even those who have requested voluntary departure or have no pending U.S. legal cases.

The twist of fate has not gone unnoticed online. Social media users have criticized Vergara for hypocrisy, pointing out her pro-life caucus alignment in Colombia and ideological closeness to the MAGA faction in the U.S. She previously mourned conservative activist Charlie Kirk and warned of threats to pro-life activists, highlighting her close ties to Trump-aligned politics.
