Donald Trump’s assertion of personal transformation following the recent shooting has quickly unraveled. Despite initial claims of becoming a “changed man,” his latest statements on Truth Social reveal a swift return to familiar, divisive rhetoric.
In a marked departure from unity, Trump launched into a heated diatribe, dismissing legal cases against him as politically motivated “witch hunts” and labeling significant the January 6th Capitol attack as a “hoax” and the New York fraud case as a “scam.”
This regression to combative rhetoric has been met with criticism and skepticism, underscoring the fleeting nature of his purported transformation.
Critics online were swift to point out the dissonance between Trump’s professed change and his unchanged behavior.
“Nothing has changed,” remarked one observer on social media.
“So much for unity… calling J6 a hoax,” another user wrote, echoing a sentiment shared widely in response to Trump’s latest outburst.
Legal expert George Conway pointed out the inconsistency, stating, “Pretending he is not bad will not make him good. Pretending he is not depraved will not make him decent. Pretending he is not dangerous will not make him safe. Pretending he is not disordered will not make him sound.”
Even voices from within the Republican Party expressed skepticism. Michael Steele, former chairman of the GOP, criticized Trump’s actions, stating, “”Again, for Trump, ‘unifying America; is about him, not US! Nothing has changed!”
“Despite everything that happened this weekend it will always be about him! As a Republican I can’t stand that this is what our party has fallen for. I miss the days of Reagan and Bush. We never had it so good!” Political scientist Robert Bentley wrote.
“What really has changed?? The official account for the hacker group Anonymous asked. “Trump is STILL an insurrectionist, STILL had relations with Epstein, the rapey pedophile, STILL was convicted of sexual misconduct, STILL was convicted of 34 felonies – STILL has six bankruptcies to his name. Only idiots would vote for him,” it added.
Danielle Campoamor, writer and formerly of the TODAY Show, chimed in, saying: “Trump ‘calls for unity’ by once again attacking Democrats and calling the woman he was found liable for sexually assaulting a liar. Again. But yeah, sure, he’s a changed man.”
“Meanwhile, the media is reporting that he’s had a ‘spiritual’ response to being shot at and is rewriting his RNC speech to be all about unity, and he saved a bus full of puppies from a fire on the way home! He f–king went golfing yesterday,” protested Tara Deenihan.
The abrupt return to divisive politics has not only sparked debate domestically but also drawn international scrutiny, with professor Nicholas Grossman accusing the media of being “in an abusive relationship with Trump.”
“Biden campaign, time to put the ads back on and take off the gloves. The MAGA GOP is not doing the unity thing, never has & never will,” Kurt Elftmann wrote.
President Joe Biden paused all of his campaign ads in the wake of the attack, and both Biden and his Vice President, Kamala Harris, have canceled Monday’s events.
As scrutiny intensifies over Trump’s narrative of transformation, his return to familiar tactics starkly underscores the threat he poses to democracy.
