Concerns over Donald Trump’s conduct reached a new level Friday after a senior Democrat formally called for a full cognitive evaluation of the president — and for the results to be made public.
Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to White House physician Sean Barbabella urging a “comprehensive cognitive assessment,” citing what he described as increasingly erratic and alarming behavior in recent months.
Raskin pointed to a series of volatile public statements — particularly tied to escalating tensions with Iran — that he said raise serious questions about Trump’s mental fitness to serve.
“Experts have repeatedly warned” of signs consistent with cognitive decline, Raskin wrote, describing Trump’s recent rhetoric as “incoherent, volatile, profane, deranged, and threatening.”
The concerns come amid heightened global tensions following U.S. military action alongside Israel against Iran earlier this year. In recent days, Trump has posted a string of aggressive messages on Truth Social, including stark warnings about catastrophic consequences and threats targeting Iranian infrastructure.
In one post that drew widespread alarm, Trump suggested that an entire civilization could be wiped out — language critics say underscores the urgency of evaluating his judgment.
Raskin stressed that at a time of war — particularly one initiated without congressional approval — the public must have confidence in the president’s mental capacity.
“The American people must be able to trust that the Commander-in-Chief has the mental capacity to discharge the essential duties of his office,” he wrote.
The White House quickly pushed back.
Spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed the request and defended Trump’s condition, insisting he remains “as sharp as ever,” while pivoting to criticism of Joe Biden and past concerns about his health.
But Raskin argued that Republicans themselves have already set the standard by raising similar concerns in the past — and should now be willing to apply it consistently.
He pointed to previous statements from GOP leaders like James Comer and Jim Jordan, both of whom have argued that a president lacking cognitive fitness is unfit for office.
“I trust that both Chairmen will stand by this important principle today,” Raskin wrote.
The request comes as some Democrats begin discussing more drastic options, including impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unable to perform the duties of the office.
Raskin is now calling for urgency, asking that the evaluation be completed by April 25 and that Barbabella testify before Congress on the findings.
As tensions escalate abroad and Trump’s rhetoric intensifies at home, the push for a cognitive assessment is quickly becoming a flashpoint — and a test of whether concerns about presidential fitness will translate into action.
