President Joe Biden on Wednesday offered a brief reaction to GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s deepening scandal surrounding the mother of one of his children, who says she had an abortion paid for by the Georgia Republican in 2009 and that he asked her to have a second abortion before she broke up with him.
Asked by reporters outside of the White House to comment about the controversy engulfing the Republican candidate, Biden responded that his assessment was “negative”.
He also predicted that Democrats would hold on to the seat currently held by Senator Raphael Warnock in November.
“What has your reaction been to the Herschel Walker controversy in Georgia, and do you think Democrats can hold that seat?” asked CNN’s MJ Lee.
“Negative,” Biden responded. “And yes.”
Walker, who has opposed abortion rights on the campaign trail, has repeatedly denied reports from The Daily Beast and the New York Times that he paid the woman with whom he was in a relationship for a 2009 abortion and then, two years later, again sought for her to have the procedure after she became pregnant for a second time.
When asked if he ever had a conversation with the woman about an abortion, or gave money to pay for the procedure, Walker responded flatly, “No” before adding: “She’s lying.”
