US president Joe Biden met with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky in a surprise visit to Kyiv almost one year after the embattled country was invaded by Russia.
The surprise visit, accompanied by the blare of a nationwide air-raid alert, comes after Biden traveled to Poland to meet president Andrzej Duda.
Biden said Washington would “stand with Ukraine as long as it takes.”
“Your visit is an extremely important sign of support for all Ukrainians,” Zelensky replied.
The visit also follows fresh intelligence suggesting Vladimir Putin was pushing for a symbolic victory to mark the one-year anniversary of the conflict.
