Washington, D.C. police are looking to arrest Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) after a 27-year-old woman accused him of assaulting her last week. However, the woman later retracted her statement to officers.

The woman initially told police that Mills hurt her last Wednesday, but later changed her story. Mills denied the assault and was not arrested. A police update on Monday confirmed that an arrest warrant was sent to a federal prosecutor but was not signed. NBC4 reported that police sent the warrant to the U.S. attorney’s office last Friday, but it was returned for further investigation. The U.S. attorney’s office declined to comment on the case, and sources say this back-and-forth can happen in investigations and may not lead to charges.

The woman said she had been in a long-term romantic relationship with Mills, who is married with children. In one of several police reports, she claimed Mills assaulted her in his penthouse and pressured her to lie about how she got bruises on her arm.

One of the reports, shared with News4, stated the woman said Mills “grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out the door.” She showed officers bruises on her arm. The report also mentioned that during a phone call between her and Mills, he allegedly told her to lie about the bruises. The report added that Mills later admitted the situation had turned from verbal to physical, enough to cause bruising.

However, the woman later told NBC4 that Mills did not assault her and that they had only argued. She said, “Although the argument was emotionally charged, there was no physical abuse involved.” She also confirmed the bruising but explained it was from being active while traveling.

Under the law, D.C. police are required to investigate domestic violence claims whether the alleged victim cooperates or not. Mills’ representative released a statement saying that law enforcement was involved in resolving a private matter at his residence.
