In a significant political shift, Mesa Mayor John Giles, a prominent Republican in Arizona’s largest suburb, announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming November election. Giles’s endorsement marks a notable departure from GOP norms, as he argues that Harris represents a critical choice for the country.

In an op-ed for The Arizona Republic, Giles called on Republicans to reject former President Donald Trump, citing concerns about his influence on the party’s direction.

“Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, no matter their background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity and security to live out their American Dream,” Giles wrote.

“Our party used to champion the idea that every Arizonan, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to pursue the American Dream,” Giles wrote. “But since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct,” he added. “The Republican Party with Trump at its helm continues down the path of political extremism, away from focusing on our fundamental freedoms.”

Giles praised the Biden-Harris administration for its contributions to Arizona, highlighting infrastructure projects and job creation, while criticizing Trump for neglecting immigration reforms. He argued that Harris embodies a return to political decency and effective governance.

The mayor drew a parallel between Harris and the late Senator John McCain, advocating for leaders who prioritize bipartisan cooperation. “Harris reflects the high standard of leadership we need, much like Senator McCain did,” Giles asserted.

Additionally, Giles expressed support for Senator Mark Kelly, who is reportedly being considered as a potential vice presidential nominee alongside Harris.

“That’s why I’m standing with her. Kamala Harris is the competent, just and fair leader our country deserves,” Giles said. “This year too much is at stake to vote Republican at the top of the ticket.”

Recent polls indicate that Trump previously led in Arizona, but current surveys show Harris neck and neck with the former president in the state.

Arizona Democrats are optimistic that Harris’s candidacy could boost their chances in the state’s Senate race, where Rep. Ruben Gallego is vying to replace outgoing Senator Kyrsten Sinema.
