After crashing the U.S. stock market with his recent tariff announcement, President Donald Trump decided to leave town and head to Florida for a Saudi-owned golf tournament.
On Thursday afternoon, Trump was scheduled to attend a LIV Golf tournament at his golf course in Doral, just outside the city. He’ll stay there for about two and a half hours before heading to a “LIV Dinner” later in the evening. Afterward, he flew to Palm Beach, where he’ll spend the night at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
The Federal Aviation Administration made the trip public on Monday by issuing a notice for temporary flight restrictions in the area during Trump’s visit. He attended the tournament last year and even took part in the Pro-Am event in 2023.
Locals saw a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter land at Trump National Doral’s 9th hole—likely a practice run for Thursday, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Meanwhile, the stock market continues to struggle after Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcement on Wednesday. The S&P 500 opened Thursday down 3.4%, and the Nasdaq 100 fell 4.1%. Companies that manufacture most of their products overseas, like Apple and Nike, saw major losses—Apple dropped 8.5%, and Nike fell 13%.
Trump’s tariff decision came after he declared a national emergency, allowing him to impose a 10% tariff on most imported goods and higher tariffs on automakers and countries he claims have treated the U.S. unfairly.
The move raised concerns from economists. CNBC’s Bonawyn Eison warned that the tariffs were “probably worse than the worst case scenario” they had expected. Others questioned the White House’s attention to detail after a graphic showed tariffs were also imposed on the Heard and McDonald Islands—uninhabited and located in the southern Indian Ocean. Tariffs were also applied to Jan Mayen, a small Norwegian island that has no permanent residents.
It’s unclear when Trump plans to return to Washington. The Palm Beach Post reported that he has spent part of 20 days in Palm Beach County during the first 70 days of his second term.
