Trump boasts that his rally is packed, then the camera pans to show empty seats

Donald Trump was busy bragging about the massive crowd at his San Antonio rally Wednesday.

Then the camera panned across the upper sections. And there they were: dozens and dozens of empty seats.

Trump was speaking at the Freeman Coliseum during a midterm rally when he once again took aim at the media while boasting about the size of the crowd.

“Look at this place. Every corner. They will say they spotted an empty seat,” Trump said.

He claimed there were lines “two miles long” outside the arena filled with people who couldn’t get in. That claim could not be immediately verified.

Trump then warned his supporters not to leave their seats.

“I tell people, ‘Please, please do not leave. Do not go to the bathroom,’” he said, arguing that the “fake news” would photograph a couple of empty seats and use them to claim he hadn’t filled the arena.

“Who the hell fills up an arena like this, for a midterm? For a midterm?” Trump asked.

And then the camera provided a rather inconvenient answer.

As Trump was talking about how packed the venue supposedly was, a C-SPAN camera panned across the upper sections of the Coliseum.

Dozens of empty seats were clearly visible.

Not two seats. Not a couple of seats. Rows of them.

Trump appeared to have an explanation.

He suggested that people who had been sitting in the upper sections had simply moved down toward the floor.

“And what they do is that the upper rows, you’ll see it, they sort of migrate downward and they all stay here by the time…” Trump said, trailing off.

Then he went right back to the superlatives.

“We’ve max out everything that you’ve ever seen,” he declared. “There’s never been anything like it.”

The moment comes after Trump has repeatedly complained about reports showing empty sections at his rallies. Just days ago, he called for news organizations to be arrested after they reported empty seats at an Ohio event, insisting that his rallies are always packed.

But in San Antonio, the president didn’t have to worry about reporters describing the empty seats.

The camera had already done it for them.
