The cover-up of Mitch McConnell’s health just cracked open on Fox News of all places.
McConnell has been missing for three months, his taxpayer-funded staff won’t answer a single question, and an entire party is covering it up.
Now a Fox News host is saying enough is enough.
Mitch McConnell has been out of the Senate for nearly three months. Now a Fox News contributor is saying enough is enough.
“If he does not come back in September, he needs to step down,” Joe Concha said Saturday on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show.
Concha said McConnell needs to return to Washington and publicly demonstrate that he is ready to resume his duties—or step aside.
“How many months has it been since we even heard from him directly?” Concha said. “I don’t want to see, you know, proof of life photos from a hospital bed anymore. He needs to get in front of a microphone and prove that he can do this job. And if he can’t, he needs to step aside. Period.”
The comments come as questions continue to swirl around McConnell’s prolonged absence and the lack of a confirmed date for his return to Capitol Hill.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was hospitalized June 14 after a fall at his Washington home. He later disclosed that he developed mild pneumonia during his hospitalization and was moved to a rehabilitation facility for recovery.
On Aug. 6, McConnell announced that he had been discharged from rehab and would continue an intensive physical-therapy regimen at home.
“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell said at the time.
But McConnell has not publicly appeared since his hospitalization, and his office has not announced when he will return to the Senate. The chamber is scheduled to reconvene Sept. 14.
That uncertainty has increasingly frustrated some politicians and commentators.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, previously called on McConnell to directly address Kentuckians about his ability to continue serving.
And even some Republicans have acknowledged that they don’t know when—or whether—McConnell will return.
Rep. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, said last week that he had not spoken directly with McConnell. Instead, he said McConnell’s staff told him that the senator’s goal is to return when the Senate reconvenes later this month.
“I expect that. I sure hope so,” Comer said when asked whether McConnell would be back Sept. 14.
But that answer wasn’t good enough for Fox News co-host Tomi Lahren.
During the same program Saturday, Lahren questioned whether it was fair for McConnell’s staff to effectively run the senator’s office while he remains out of public view.
“I don’t know if that’s quite fair to the American people though that unelected staffers are running the show for Senator Mitch McConnell,” Lahren said. “I think you’ve gotta play it fair here.”
Comer said he hoped McConnell would return within weeks.
“I certainly hope to see him in the Senate in the next few weeks,” he said. “And if he’s not, there’ll be a reason why and the Senator will be able [to] explain that to the American people. But hopefully he’ll [be] back in two weeks.”
McConnell has said he intends to complete his current Senate term, which runs through January 2027. He is not seeking reelection.
For now, though, the question hanging over the Senate is simple: When will Mitch McConnell return?
The Senate’s Republican majority is narrow, making the absence of one of its most senior members particularly consequential as lawmakers prepare to return to Washington.
And according to Concha, McConnell now has a choice. Come back and show the country he can do the job—or step aside.
