Ted Cruz went on Fox News to attack Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — and somehow ended up delivering one of the most unintentionally self-own moments of all time.
During an interview Monday with Sean Hannity, Cruz tried mocking AOC over her comments about billionaires and economic inequality. Instead, critics noticed he accidentally described his own career with stunning accuracy.
Here’s the line that immediately detonated online:
“By the way, AOC also said it is impossible for someone to earn a billion dollars,” Cruz began. “Which, look, I recognize for her, given she was a bartender, that is probably true. No disrespect to bartenders. Bartenders are an honorable profession. But she went from that to being a government employee and a parasite sucking on the taxpayer.”
There’s just one problem with that attack. Ted Cruz himself has spent most of his adult life working in government.
And people online noticed immediately.
Former Jeopardy! champion Hemant Mehta summed up the obvious contradiction in one sentence: “Ted Cruz just called himself a parasite sucking on the taxpayer,”
Comedian Sam Weber added: “Love him calling himself a parasite,”
And John F. Clark absolutely dismantled Cruz’s logic by pointing out the senator’s own career path.
“Ted Cruz seems to have forgotten what he is, and what he was,” Clark wrote “He’s never done anything but go to school, do some lawyering, and then go to work for the government. We need more bartenders and fewer lawyers in Congress.”
And honestly? That last part probably lands harder than Cruz intended.
Because while Cruz was trying to sneer at AOC’s bartending background, plenty of Americans would probably rather hear from someone who’s worked customer service, struggled with rent, and dealt with the real-world economy than yet another career politician whose resume consists almost entirely of elite schools, legal work, and government offices.
What makes the moment even more ridiculous is that Cruz apparently thought “government employee” was some kind of devastating insult — while literally serving as a taxpayer-funded United States senator during the interview.
It’s the kind of accidental irony that has become increasingly common in modern political media: politicians attacking “elites,” “government workers,” or “the system” while sitting comfortably inside the very structure they claim to despise.
And this time, Cruz managed to say the quiet part out loud.
